Tetrahedral metal groups in Fe2B and Mn4B structures

Abstract
Fe2B- and Mn4B-type compounds are described for the first time in terms of structural frameworks of close-packed M4 tetrahedra with ten nearest neighbors. The physical significance of the metal tetrahedra is discussed. Assignment of a quasi-spherical radius to the M4 units enables a fairly accurate calculation of unit-cell dimensions. Various packing models leading to a coordination of ten are examined.
