Summary

The article deals with fundamental questions of etymology and especially with the history of the Slavic dialectical word ponyaga (‘backpack’). It is shown that contradictory meanings of the word in different dialects (ponyaga is used in the sense of ‘bridle’ for reindeers as well as in the sense of ‘backpack’) can be explained with the common verbal sense ‘to take hold’, ‘to take’.
