Abstract
The meaning of the adj. ἄποτμος and the derived forms ἀποτμότατος und πανάποτμος, which are often attested in the homeric poems, has been wrongly associated with “misfortune” and/or “ill-starred fate” both in ancient and in contemporary commentaries. This fact is mainly due to the interpretation of the prefix ἀ- as ἀ-privativum. However, if we consider this prefix as an ἀ-copulativum, we can interpret the quotations of the aforementioned terms much more appropriately. Apart from that, the present survey tries to differentiate clearly the meaning of the term παναώριος from that of πανάποτμος in the homeric poems as the former relates rather to μινυνϑάδιος and ὠκύμορος.
