Abstract

With a focus on fashion and two empirical cases, we show how creativity is organized by routines, projects and various collaborations and how it is brought about by communication. In this reading, communication is not only crucial for informing external audiences, but also for sensemaking. While retrospective sensemaking covers storytelling and staging and is usually used for external communication, prospective sensemaking refers to narratives that direct internal processes and future decision-making. Creativity – understood as designing, producing and showing products that allow for creativity attributions – thus is a collective process (i. e. initiated, materialized and communicated by various actors) that is organized (which means that projects are coordinated by particular organizations, departments or positions) and institutionalized (i. e. based on norms, values and beliefs that result in manifest creativity expectations). Finally, we discuss implications particularly regarding the impacts of creativity on innovation and its generalizations in the creative industries and beyond.
