Prohibited Mixtures: Mixed Clothing and Social Class

Abstract
Prohibiting mixed fabric in Leviticus 19:19d and Deuteronomy 22:11 has often been interpreted as maintaining the created order or avoiding a holy mixture. However, weaving together two kinds of cloth does not make a hybrid that disrupts cosmic order. Also, the consecration ritual is the origin of holiness in the priestly clothing. I argue that mixed clothing is prohibited because the priestly class is strictly inherited. I will show how the Israelites must wear the national/ethnic clothing, tassels with a cord of blue, but cannot wear the clothing of the solely inherited class, mixed fabric.
Zusammenfassung
Das Verbot von Mischgewebe in Levitikus 19,19d und Deuteronomium 22,11 wurde oft so interpretiert, dass die Schöpfungsordnung gewahrt oder eine heilige Mischung vermieden werden soll. Wenn man jedoch zwei Arten von Stoffen miteinander verwebt, entsteht keine Mischung, die die kosmische Ordnung stört. Außerdem ist das Weiheritual der Ursprung der Heiligkeit der priesterlichen Kleidung. Ich behaupte, dass gemischte Kleidung verboten ist, weil der Priesterstand streng vererbt wird. Ich werde zeigen, wie die Israeliten die nationale/ethnische Kleidung, Quasten mit einer blauen Kordel, tragen müssen, aber nicht die Kleidung der ausschließlich ererbten Klasse, Mischgewebe, tragen dürfen.
Résumé
L’interdiction des étoffes hybrides en Lévitique 19,19d et Deutéronome 22,11 a souvent été interprétée comme le maintien de l’ordre créé ou l’évitement d’un mélange sacré. Cependant, tisser ensemble deux sortes de fils ne crée pas un hybride qui perturbe l’ordre cosmique. En outre, le rituel de consécration est à l’origine de la sainteté des vêtements sacerdotaux. Je défends la thèse que les étoffes hybrides sont interdites parce que la classe sacerdotale est strictement héréditaire. Les Israélites doivent porter le vêtement national/ethnique – les glands avec un cordon bleu – mais ne peuvent pas porter le vêtement de la classe strictement héréditaire, l’étoffe hybride.
