A New Etymology for Hebrew אֶלְגָּבִישׁ and Related Lexemes

Abstract
The Hebrew word אֶלְגָּבִישׁ has typically been understood as referring to hail. This presents a lexical problem, given that all of its apparent cognates appear to refer to rock. Based on a reanalysis of existing lexical data with the inclusion of new cognates and a new analysis of the imagery contained within Ezekiel 13 and Ezekiel 38, this study proposes that Hebrew אֶלְגָּבִישׁ, Akkadian algamešu, Ugaritic, a͗lgbṯ, Egyptian, i͗rḳbs, and other related words all derive from Egyptian i͗nr-km.
Zusammenfassung
Das hebräische Wort אֶלְגָּבִישׁ wird meist so verstanden, als ob es sich auf »Hagel« bezieht. Dies stellt jedoch ein lexikalisches Problem dar, da sich alle offensichtlich verwandten Wörter auf »Fels« zu beziehen scheinen. Basierend auf einer erneuten Analyse der vorhandenen lexikalischer Daten unter Einbeziehung neuer verwandter Wörter und einer neuen Analyse der in Hesekiel 13 und Hesekiel 38 enthaltenen Bilder schlägt diese Studie vor, dass das hebräische אֶלְגָּבִישׁ, das akkadische algamešu, das ugaritische a͗lgbṯ, das ägyptische i͗rḳbs, und andere verwandte Wörter von dem ägyptischen i͗nr-km herzuleiten sind.
Résumé
Le mot hébreu אֶלְגָּבִישׁ généralement été compris comme désignant la grêle, ce qui présente un problème lexical étant donné que tous les mots apparentés semblent se référer à la roche. Basée sur un nouvel examen des données lexicales existantes avec l’inclusion de nouveaux cognats et une nouvelle analyse de l’imagerie contenue en Ez 13 et 38, cette étude propose que l’hébreu אֶלְגָּבִישׁ, l’akkadien algamešu, l’ougaritique a͗lgbṯ, l’égyptien i͗rḳbs, et d’autres mots apparentés dérivent tous de l’égyptien i͗nr-km.
