Treatment of the J.O. Halliwell-Phillipps Collection of Albums with Shakespearean Rarities at the Folger Shakespeare Library

Abstract
The Folger Shakespeare Library in Washington DC holds a collection of 32 albums from the English collector J. O. Halliwell-Phillipps, dating back to the mid 19th century. The drawings, maps and prints were mounted on acidic matboard and required conservation treatment. The adhesive between stubs and matboard had failed in some areas and the cumbersome original binding structure was causing stress at the stub when opened. This article describes a unique approach to preserve the original binding along with the textblock content by binding the textblock into a separate post-binding and reincorporating the new textblock into the old binding with a slipcase.
Zusammenfassung
Die Folger Shakespeare Library in Washington DC bewahrt eine Sammlung von 32 Alben des englischen Sammlers J.O. Halliwell Phillipp aus der Mitte des 19. Jahrhunderts. Die Zeichnungen, Landkarten und Druckgrafiken waren auf einen säurehaltigen Passepartoutkarton montiert und befanden sich in restaurierungsbedürftigem Zustand. Die Verbindung zwischen den Fälzen und den Passepartoutkartons war in einigen Bereichen nicht mehr intakt, die unhandlichen und schweren Einbände verursachten beim Öffnen Spannungen im Falzbereich. Dieser Artikel stellt ein neuartiges Restaurierungskonzept vor, dessen Ziel es war, sowohl die historischen Einbände wie auch die Anordnung der Objekte auf den Albumseiten zu erhalten. Dieses Ziel wurde umgesetzt, indem die Buchblöcke separat neu gebunden wurden, und in die originalen Einbände durch Anfertigung von Schubern integriert wurden.

La Bibliothèque Folger Shakespeare de Washington DC détient une collection de 32 albums rassemblés au milieu du 19ème Siècle par le collectionneur anglais J.O. Halliwell-Phillipps. Les albums avaient besoin d'une restauration structurelle d'envergure car le raccordement entre la feuillure et le cadre n'était plus intact à certains endroits. D'autre part les dessins, cartes géographiques et gravures étaient montés sur des feuilles de carton passepartout contenant de l'acide. Les reliures n'étaient pas faciles à manipuler et provoquaient à l'ouverture des albums des tensions à l'endroit de la pliure. Dans cet article on exposera un concept qui vise à préserver les reliures d'origine ainsi que l'arrangement des oeuvres d'art qui y sont attachées. La couverture du livre a été retirée de la reliure, reliée séparément et assemblée avec l'ancienne reliure au moyen d'une gaine.
