Goethe- and Schiller-Archive, Weimar: Guidelines for the Preservation and Conservation

Abstract
Preparation of the conservation project “Goethe-Schiller Letter Exchange”, financed through the Ministry of State for Culture, brought up, beyond questions concerning the planned project, the more general question on how unique and highly valuable cultural property should be treated. In this context, the Goethe- and Schiller-Archive developed a set of criteria that will facilitate the implementation of responsible preservation in the future. All the different stations and modes of object use were to be considered, including storage, study room handling, preservation and conservation measures. During a colloquium concerning the conservation project (January 15–16, 2009), the Guidelines were presented for discussion, and the positive international resonance stimulated their publication.
Zusammenfassung
Bei der Vorbereitung des Restaurierungsvorhabens „Goethe-Schiller-Briefwechsel“, das aus Mitteln des Beauftragten für Kultur und Medien finanziert wird, tauchte neben Fragen der geplanten restauratorischen Behandlung auch die allgemeine Frage auf, wie solche hochkarätigen Kulturgüter behandelt werden sollten. In diesem Zusammenhang wurden im Goethe- und Schiller-Archiv Grundsätze erarbeitet, die ein verantwortliches Handeln sicherstellen sollten. Dabei sollten alle Bereiche des Umgangs berücksichtigt werden, d. h. Aufbewahrung, Benutzung, Sicherung und Restaurierung. Während des Kolloquiums zum o.g. Restaurierungsvorhaben am 15.–16. Januar 2009 wurden sie auch zur Diskussion gestellt und von den auswärtigen Fachleuten positiv bewertet und deren Publikation angeregt.
