Conservation of the Correspondence Letters of Ludwig Börne and Jeanette Wohl

Abstract
The University Library Frankfurt/Main initiated the conservation of the letters exchanged between 1813–1833 by Ludwig Börne and Jeanette Wohl. The project is described in terms of its rationale and practical execution, including documentation, disbinding of the volumes that held the letters, removal of various tapes and protein adhesive residues, physical stabilisation with Japanese tissue paper coated with wheat starch paste or Klucel®, and the rehousing of the collection. Due to the water-sensitivity of the objects, only selected letters received aqueous treatment. It is discussed how consideration was given to intrinsic features of the letters that had to be preserved.
Zusammenfassung
Die Universitätsbibliothek Frankfurt am Main beauftragte 2006 die Konservierung des Briefwechsels zwischen Ludwig Börne und Jeanette Wohl aus den Jahren 1818 bis 1833. Die Herangehensweise und Durchführung des Projekts werden beschrieben. Dabei wird besonders eingegangen auf die Dokumentation, das Zerlegen der gebundenen Faszikel, die Entfernung unterschiedlicher Klebestreifen und proteinhaltiger Klebstoffe, die mechanische Stabilisierung mit Japanpapier und Weizenstärkekleister oder reaktivierbarem Klucel® und das neue Lagerungskonzept. Aufgrund der Wasserempfindlichkeit der Briefe wurden nur ausgewählte Blätter einer wässrigen Behandlung zugeführt. Überlegungen zur Bedeutung des intrinsischen Werts der Briefe werden angestellt.
Résumé
La bibliothèque de l'université de Francfort a entrepris dans une perspective d'édition des mesures de restauration sur la correspondance entretenue par Ludwig Börne et Jeanette Wohl entre les années 1813 et 1833, correspondance qui comprend plus de 800 lettres. Comme ces lettres étaient en mauvais état il a fallu les soumettre à certains traitements conservatoires avant de pouvoir les numériser et les filmer sur des supports de sécurité. Le projet est décrit en fonction des différentes mesures et des décisions sur lesquelles elles s'appuient, y compris la documentation, le retrait des additifs adhésifs nuisibles et la stabilisation avec du papier Japon recouvert soit de MC, soit de Klucel™. Les arguments motivant la décision qui a été prise pour appliquer des mesures conservatoires plutôt classiques, pour un nouveau concept de stockage et contre un traitement aqueux au phytate et au bicarbonate de calcium seront présentés.
