Abstract:

The theory of the parergon, presented by Kant in § 14 of the Analytic of the Beautiful in the Critique of Judgment (1791), was the subject of a detailed critique by Derrida in The Truth in Painting (1978). The Kantian theory is based on a distinction between the intrinsic production (the ergon) and the extrinsic production (the parergon) of a work. Studying the examples of painting, sculpture and even architecture put forward by Kant, Derrida concluded that it was impossible to distinguish between the interior and the exterior of a work. We move beyond the often inaccurate translations to conduct a close examination of Kant’s German text. Not only does this clarify the meaning of the theory of the parergon, but it also reveals implicit conceptual distinctions that allow us to challenge Derrida’s critique.
