Stemmatics and the Old French Prose Arthurian Romance Editions

Abstract
Stemmatics, that is the branch of philology concerned with analysing the relationships among extant variant versions of a text, is not a common tool in the study of the manuscript traditions of Arthurian Old French Prose Romances. Moreover, the lack of faith in the method has often led to its being implemented unsatisfactorily. However, it would be possible to proceed differently in applying stemmatics to this type of textual tradition; and this method could also be very useful in order to understand the genesis of texts, their reconstruction, and their reception. The discussion focuses on editions of the most important romances, such as the Lancelot-Grail-Cycle, the Prose Tristan and the Guiron-Cycle.
Résumé
La méthode des fautes communes (‘stemmatique’) n’est plus depuis longtemps un instrument valorisé pour l’étude des tradition manuscrites des romans arthuriens en prose. En plus, la méfiance dans la méthode en a souvent produit des applications peu surveillées. Cependant, une adaptation de la méthode à ce type de tradition textuelle est possible, et pourrait se révéler très utile pour comprendre la genèse des textes, leur reconstruction, ou leur réception. L’article offre des exemples tirés des éditions les plus importantes, du cycle du Lancelot-Graal, au Tristan en prose, jusqu’au cycle de Guiron le Courtois.
Zusammenfassung
Die Stemmatik, d. h. die Handschriftenphilologie, die das Verhältnis überlieferter Textzeugen zueinander auf der Grundlage von Bindungs- und Trennfehlern bestimmt, ist keine gebräuchliche Methode in der überlieferungsgeschichtlichen Forschung zu altfranzösischen Prosaromanen. Aufgrund mangelnden Vertrauens in diese Methode wurde sie zudem oft nur unzureichend angewandt. Die Methode wäre aber (bei etwas veränderter Herangehensweise) durchaus auf diese Textsorte anwendbar, und sie könnte sehr nützlich sein, um die Genese der Texte, ihre Veränderung oder ihre Rezeption zu verstehen. Dies wird hier am Beispiel der Editionen der wichtigsten Romane, nämlich des Lancelot-Gral-Zyklus, des Tristan en prose und des Guiron-le-Courtois-Zyklus, demonstriert.
