Abstract

In this study, the composite material ACF/TiO2 was prepared by sol-gel adsorption method and utilized for the removal of Cr(VI) in aqueous solution. Experiments were conducted to evaluate the effects of various parameters on the removal of Cr(VI). Results showed that the removal efficiency of Cr(VI) decreased with the increase of pH in acidic solution, firstly increased and then decreased with the increase of TiO2 loading dosage, and increased with the addition of 5 mg/L methyl orange. The highest removal efficiency of 99.9% after 60 min UV irradiation was obtained when initial concentration 126 mg/L, initial pH 3.0, TiO2 loading dosage 40% and methyl orange concentration 5 mg/L. It was also observed that there was a synergistic effect between ACF and TiO2 in the photocatalytic reduction process of Cr(VI), which could simultaneously reduce Cr(VI) and remove total Cr. Besides, the removal behavior of Cr(VI) on ACF/TiO2 followed pseudo-first order kinetics.
