Abstract

Synergistic effect of TiO2 photocatalytic ozonation (a combination of TiO2 photocatalytic oxidation and ozonation) was investigated for the degradation of pesticide Carbaryl. The experiments were conducted under different ozone dosages (0.12-0.57 g/h), catalyst dosage (0.5-2 g/L), pH (3-9) and light source (254 and 365 nm) to arrive at optimized reaction conditions for carbaryl degradation by photocatalytic ozonation. Then, three experimental sets (TiO2/UV, UV/O3 and TiO2/UV/O3) were conducted under optimized reaction conditions to prove the synergistic effect of ozone on TiO2 photocatalysis. By photocatalytic ozonation process, complete removal of parent carbaryl molecule and 77% mineralization was achieved. The kinetic study showed that degradation rate constant with TiO2/UV/O3 was 2.3 times higher than O3/UV and 4.4 times higher than that of TiO2/UV. The laboratory study has also demonstrated that effective utilization of ozone in the combined process. Thus, photocatalytic ozonation process will overcome the disadvantage of the selectivity of ozonation and the lower efficiency of TiO2 photocatalysis in the degradation of pesticides.
