Abstract

Solar-driven photo-oxidative treatments (titanium dioxide and photo-Fenton) have been employed to remediate real effluents from cotton-dyeing processes. Exhaustion baths containing reactive dyes with azo chromophores (Reactive Red 110) have been successfully treated by TiO2 photocatalysis. The obtained effluent reached the required quality to be re-used for further dyeing processes. However, phthalocyanine-based reactive dyestuffs (Reactive Blue 15) could not be efficiently removed by this method. For this reason, photo-Fenton has been checked to remediate phthalocyanine containing baths; after 90 minutes of solar process, 88% of decolorization, 86% COD decrease and 70% TOC removal were measured. The treated solution was employed to dye a new sample of cotton and its reflection UV-vis spectrum closely matched that obtained for the sample dyed using fresh water. Similar results were obtained with a quadrichromy involving Reactive Yellow 161, Reactive Red 43, Reactive Blue 4 and Reactive Blue 15, indicating that this procedure might be useful for a wide range of textile activities.
