Vacuum-UV- (VUV-) Photochemically Initiated Oxidation of Dimethylamine in the Gas Phase

Abstract

The vacuum ultraviolet (VUV-) photochemical oxidation of dimethylamine in the gas phase was investigated in the presence and absence of molecular oxygen and water vapor. Primary intermediate products of the oxidative degradation were identified by the combination of gas chromatography and mass spectrometry (GC/MS), and the product distribution was determined for different experimental conditions. The evolution of the substrate concentration was followed by on-line gas chromatography. The production of CO2 was analyzed by FTIR spectroscopy. Among the intermediate products identified, ethyleneimine and N,N,N’,N’-tetramethylmethanediamine were, independent of the presence or absence of molecular oxygen, most abundant, however, the latter only, if higher substrate concentrations were to be oxidized. In the presence of O2, typical products of oxidation, such as nitromethane and formamides were found. In the absence of O2, tetramethylhydrazine was most significant for the generation of the dimethylaminyl radical. The presence or absence of H2O did not alter the chemical nature of the oxidation products, but affected the production of nitromethane. However, the concentration of H2O in the gas phase determined the efficiency of the consumption of the substrate.
