Abstract
Ruthenium(II)-tris-bipyridine/titanium dioxide codoped zeolite Y (Ru(bpy)32+/TiO2/Y) has been proven to be an efficient heterogeneous photocatalyst in Fenton-type oxidation reactions. However, these catalysts have exhibited low efficiency when high concentrations of aromatic amines (e.g. 2,4-xylidine) were treated. We have developed a mechanistic paradigm based on our photophysical studies (luminescence quenching of encapsulated Ru(bpy)32+by Fe3+ ) that accounts for this behavior. Our studies have demonstrated that the addition of small amounts of iron(III) can help to overcome the photocatalyst’s low efficiency.
