Abstract

This paper proposes a novel configuration of conventional flying capacitor (FC) inverter called cell flying capacitor converter (CFC). The proposed topology is obtained by replacing the clamping capacitor of flying capacitor converter with number of series connected half-bridge cells. The main advantages of the proposed converter, compared to the conventional FC converter, are drastic reduction in the number of switches and capacitors. Furthermore, there are redundant switching states which cause to create different pole voltages. In this structure, it is possible to balance the capacitor voltages instantaneously in any direction of the current, by selecting suitable switching states, irrespective of the load power factor. To evaluate performance of the proposed configuration and its control strategy, simulation has been done in MATLAB/Simulink and results have been presented.
