Abstract

This paper discusses the meaning of Hong Kong community words, and mainly studies the following four issues: the characteristics of the meaning of Hong Kong community words, the formation modes of the meaning of Hong Kong community words, the connection modes between the different meanings of polysemes in Hong Kong community words, and the similarities and differences between the word meaning association modes of Hong Kong community words and those of Mandarin. This paper argues that, in general, the Hong Kong community words, whether single or polysemous words have shown distinct characteristics in the emphasis of the lexical meaning, the color meaning of the word, the degree of euphemism and implication of word meaning, the constituent motivation of the word meaning and so on. There are five main ways to form the meaning of Hong Kong community words: relying on the metonymy meaning of a single morpheme to form the meaning of community words; relying on the metaphorical meaning of a single morpheme to form the meaning of community words; relying on the unique meaning of a single morpheme to form the meaning of community words; relying on the meaning of each morpheme in the whole word to form the meaning of community words through metaphor; relying on the meaning of each morpheme in the whole word to form the meaning of community words through metonymy. There are mainly seven ways to correlate the meanings of polysemes in Hong Kong community words: metaphor, metonymy, special reference, general reference, extension, analogy and analogy. There are similarities and differences between the polysemes in Hong Kong community words and those in common Mandarin in the way of semantic association. Both of them have four categories: metaphor, metonymy, special reference and extension. General reference, analogy and analogy are unique types of community words.
