Abstract

It is, of course, impossible to provide examples of inconceivable possibilities. The argument for their existence has to be developed on the basis of general principles and the paper accordingly seeks to show that this can be done in a credible manner. The core of the argument is (1) that our conceptions have to be developed linguistically, (2) that whatever can be managed by language has to proceed recursively, so that in consequence only a denumerable number of conceivable outcomes can be realized, and (3) that there is no reason to think that the range of Reality – let alone the range of Possibility – is of merely denumerable scope.
