The First International conference on Chemistry for Beauty and Health was held from 13-16 June 2018 at Nicolas Copernicus University in Torun, Poland. The conference was endorsed by IUPAC, the European Polymer Federation (EPF), and the Polish Society for Biomaterials (PSB). The conference was organized by the Department of Chemistry of Biomaterials and Cosmetics, Nicolas Copernicus University in Torun, Poland. There were about 90 participants from Canada, Brazil, Italy, Portugal, Spain, Switzerland, Russia, Czech Republic, Romania, United Kingdom, and Poland. The conference consisted of 3 plenary lectures, 6 invited talks, 16 oral presentations, and 3 poster sessions.

The main topics of the conference were:

  1. Biomaterials

  2. Cosmetic chemistry

  3. Polymers and biopolymers for beauty and health

  4. Pharmaceutical chemistry

  5. Food chemistry

  6. Applied chemistry

We held a Session for Young Scientists. The Plenary lecturers were given by:

Diego Mantovani, Laval University, Quebec City, Canada; 3D triple cell culture in bioreactors from collagen gel scaffolds: Innovation in cosmetics, advanced in vitro models and regenerative medicine. Mauro Alini, AO, Davos; Switzerland, Hyaluronan hydrogel platform for musculoskeletal regeneration.Fernando Monteiro, University of Porto, Portugal; Mimicking the extracellular matrix of bone through composite scaffolds for bone regeneration and drug releasing.

Invited speakers included:

Leszek Kubisz, Poznań University of Medical Sciences, Poland; Application of in vivo electric impedance measurement in human skin assessment.Elżbieta Pamula, AGH University of Science and Technology in Kraków, Poland; Engineering stimuli responsive nano- and microcarriers to enhance efficacy of the drug therapies.Maria Letizia Focarete, Department of Chemistry ‘G. Ciamician’, University of Bologna, Bologna, Italy; Gelatin-based nanofibrous electrospun scaffolds with potentialities in health and cosmetics.José Miguel Martín Martínez, Adhesion and Adhesion Laboratory, University of Alicante, Alicante, Spain; Improved adhesion of polydimethylsiloxane (silicone) to acrylic adhesive tapefor non-permanent bond of ear correctors.Bartosz Tylkowski, Chemistry Technology Centre of Catalonia, Tarragona, Catalonia, Spain; Encapsulation technology - shedding light on new benefits.Vladimir Sedlarik, Centre of Polymer Systems, University Institute, Tomas Bata University in Zlin, Zlin, Czech Republic; Immobilization of Specific Bioactive Substances in Functionalized Biodegradable Polymer Matrices.

The Polish journal Polimery founded the prize for the best presentation regarding polymer science. A welcome letter from IUPAC was read by Dr. Lidija Siller from New Castle University, UK.

The conference was rich in social events, which helped in informal discussion and encouraged start-up collaboration. After the opening reception at the Academic Center for Culture and Arts Od Nowa club, attendees enjoyed a blues concert by the band Tortilla. Professional guides led a tour around Torun, including a visit to the Museum of Toruń Gingerbread.

Participants visited the Centre for Astronomy at Nicolaus Copernicus University in Toruń and after guided tour around the centre, a barbecue was held in the garden of Centre for Astronomy with traditional Polish food. The Farewell Conference Dinner with regional food and beer was organized at Jan Olbracht Old Town Brewery in Torun.

We believe that this First International conference on Chemistry for Beauty and Health was a successful event and we are planning for the 2nd International conference to be held on 12-15 June 2019, again at Nicolas Copernicus University in Torun, Poland.
