“Polymers: Design, Function, and Application” (PDFA, also known as Polymers 2018) saw the gathering of 137 participants from 37 countries for the first event of this series. The organizer invited 15 speakers in total (11 invited speakers as listed at: https://sciforum.net/conference/ polymers-2018, plus four Young Investigator Award candidates, who all spoke at the Young Investigator Award session on 21 March 2018), and selected 25 researchers to give an oral presentation. In total, 123 posters were displayed during the conference.
A Meet the Editor session was held on day 1, right before the Young Investigator Award session was inserted in the program. There were 110 people that registered to the MtE session. It was the first time that the journal editors, as well as the in-house staff, had met in person with a large group of our readers, authors, and potential contributors. The journal’s performance and the overall status of MDPI was introduced to the audience, and the editors happily revealed some details on the peer-review process, publication speed, and journal strategy.

The winner of 2018 Young Investigator Award went to Dr. Lei Fang from Texas A&M University, who was selected by the evaluation committee from an anonymous vote. The announcement of the YIA can be found at: http://www.mdpi.com/journal/polymers/awards. In addition, two travel awards to attend this conference were conferred to Patxi Garra from the University of Upper Alsace, France, and Kangkana Banerjee from the University of Mysore, India. Both invited lectures and oral presentations went very well and smooth. People were satisfied and actively engaged in the discussion and Q&A. Subjects of all talks in the main sessions can be found at: https://sciforum.net/conference/polymers-2018.
The journal Polymers has organized a Special Issue to publish full papers from the conference, titled “Polymers: Design, Function and Application,” in which all conference participants can submit a manuscript and, if accepted, will benefit from a 20 % discount on the publication fees.
The conference committee is pleased to announce that, based on the success of this event, they are already planning the next edition of the Polymers conference series.
