Abstract

The global book market and the multiple identity of many writers makes the traditional classification of author by nationality or language questionable. Reason enough to discuss the German terms MigrantInnenliteratur and Migrationsliteratur, which are frequently used to refer to literature written by migrants. Literary texts that cannot clearly be classified by the author’s nationality or by their language are labelled and thereby marginalised this way, for they are read as social documents rather than works of art. The label one uses should be based on different criteria. – An analysis of Zoé Valdés’ Café Nostalgia and Sevgi Emine Özdamar’s Die Brücke vom Goldenen Horn shows that there are no common themes or external criteria (e.g. common experiences or social backgrounds) to justify the term MigrantInnenliteratur. The term should rather be based on structural criteria: MigrantInnenliteratur is characterized mostly by movement on the level of both “histoire” and “récit”. Ottmar Ette’s alternative, structural phrase, “Literatur in Bewegung” (literature in motion), makes the hybridity of this literature explicit.
