(Exodus 14,20): New Light on an Old Problem

Exegetes of Ex 14,20 have long had difficulty with the combination of cloud and darkness on the one hand, with light on the other, in the description of the Israelites' salvation in Ex 14,20. This study proposes a new interpretation of the phrase as referring to the emergence of lightning from the cloud, based upon biblical parallels (Job 36–37; Ps 77,19; 97,4), thus eliminating this tension. Cloud, darkness, and lightning are found together in biblical theophanies, and it is suggested that this is the Gattung of Ex 14,20.

Les exégètes d'Ex. 14,20 ont toujours eu des difficultés avec la combinaison »nuage / obscurité« et »lumière« dans la description du salut d'Israël. Cette étude propose une nouvelle interprétation de l'expression: , comprise comme désignant l'apparition de l'éclair hors du nuage, sur la base de parallèles bibliques (Job 36–37; Ps. 77,19; 97,4) et résoud ainsi cette tension. Nuage, obscurité et éclair se retrouvent ensemble dans les théophanies bibliques, et c'est à ce genre qu'appartient Ex. 14,20.

Ausleger von Ex 14,20 haben sich lange schwer getan mit der Kombination von Wolke und Dunkelheit auf der einen und Licht auf der anderen Seite bei der Beschreibung der Errettung Israels in diesem Vers. In dieser Untersuchung wird eine neue Interpretation der Wendung vorgeschlagen. Durch Verweis auf das Erscheinen des Blitzes aus der Wolke, wie es in biblischen Parallelen (Hi 36–37; Ps 77,19; 97,4) belegt ist, wird diese Spannung aufgelöst. Wolke, Dunkelheit und Blitz finden sich nebeneinander in alttestamentlichen Theophanien, und es wird vorgeschlagen, dass Ex 14,20 dieser Gattung zugehört.
