Chapter 1 (How) do professors advance diversity in research organizations? A literature review

Abstract
This study delves into the involvement of professors as academic leaders in advancing diversity within academic environments. By conducting a review of existing literature published between 2010 and 2023, it identifies crucial themes such as institutional policies, cultural competence, organizational performance, representation, and global perspectives. Despite the extensive research on diversity, equality and inclusion (DEI) strategies, a noticeable gap remains in literature which specifically outlines how professors actively support diversity. This study highlights the dual roles of professors as both subjects and agents of diversity initiatives, accentuating their engagement in advocacy, mentorship, policy formulation, and leadership. The results stress the necessity for additional research to document the precise actions and strategies employed by professors to promote diversity within their institutions. Understanding these roles can offer valuable insights for crafting targeted strategies to cultivate an inclusive academic atmosphere, thereby contributing to a more diverse and equitable research community.
