Abstract

This paper explicates Ovid’s riff on lucky and unlucky days in Book 1 of the Ars amatoria, namely, the days on which the teacher of erotics advises the neophyte male lover to visit or not to visit his beloved. The discussion explores Ovid’s engagement with the principal didactic intertexts in Hesiod’s Works and Days and Virgil’s Georgics, but also the affinities with Ovid’s later Fasti and the possible reaction to Augustus’ remaking of the Roman calendar.
