Abstract

This paper argues that the presence of Apuleius’ Psyche in the libretto of Michel-Jean Sedaine for the music by André Ernest Modest Grétry of the opéra comique Raoul Barbe Bleue (“Raoul Bluebeard”, 1789) becomes a revolutionary feature, both within the play itself and its context, which is the looming French Revolution. In the libretto, Sedaine inserts three examples of female curiosity which are not included in the original version of the fairy tale. One of these examples is Apuleius’ Psyche. By utilising the ambiguity embedded in the concept of curiosity in Apuleius’ novel, Sedaine renders Psyche a positive model for his heroine Isaure, who manages to orchestrate the death of her tyrannical and murderous husband Bluebeard, and thus save her life and secure the play’s happy ending. In conclusion, the paper suggests that the play foreshadows the French Revolution by fostering a revolutionary Psyche.
