10 The European Creative City: Contextualising Urban Policies and Strategies for Creative Industries

Abstract
The chapter looks at links, overlaps and divergences between two theoretical city models that were debated at the turn of the century and have not been discussed together: the EuropeEuropean model and the creative citycreative city. This chapter discusses the extent to which the literature on the creative city model has been able to incorporate the debate on the European city, and how the former integrates or disrupts the main features of the latter. The focus on the European city model does not imply a Eurocentric point of view: it is intended to highlight the need for a situated approach, capable of understanding local processes and not only local contexts aiming to build a new and situated conceptual framework, rather than an exogenous one.
