22 Mapping and “Futuring” Strategic Competencies for the Creative Workforce: A European Outlook

Abstract

The transition to a digital and green economy and society, accelerated by the COVID-19 pandemics, poses new challenges to the Cultural and Creative Industries (CCI) and its creative workforce. One response to changing labour market’ challenges lie in the upskilling and reskilling of the workforce, which has been put in place by EuropeEuropean policymaking initiatives, focusing strategically on entrepreneurial, digital, and environmental competences. However, these responses have only recently been extended to the CCI and its creative workforce. This chapter presents some results of the European-funded project CYANOTYPES, that contributes to address the skills gaps between the CCI (demand) and its workforce (job offer). Through a literature review, we mapped the entrepreneurial, digital, and environmental skills needed in the European CCI in the post-pandemic world. Combined with CCI stakeholders’ workshops on future skills, a conceptual tool was co-constructed. Both individuals and organisations, as well as different CCI-subsectors, can use this flexible online open tool, dubbed “The Creative Agency Circle”, as it enables the delivery of innovative and customisable training contents. Hence, this tool aims to contribute to mitigate the old-time problem of the CCI fragmentation, and to the flourishing of the (precarious) creative workforce.
