Abstract

A core concept of political geography bringing together space, power, and meaning, territory is rife for feminist intervention. This chapter illustrates how feminist scholarship on territory operates across scales. It does so by interrogating the epistemological foundations of territory whilst simultaneously positioning bodies and bodily autonomy, including health and reproduction, as part of collective and ideological struggles over territory. The chapter is structured around three key promises of feminist work on territory. Firstly, to expose and challenge the many uneven, often violent, power relations that shape dominant territorial formations. Secondly, to decenter the state in the making of territories. And finally, to reject violence as an essential part of territory, rooting it instead in a gentler politics of care and equitable exchange. It is argued that feminist scholarship and practice has an important role to play in working toward more equitable, emancipatory, and ecologically sound territorial orders.
