Sprache und Gefühl: Überlegungen zur theologischen Hermeneutik
-
Roderich Barth
Abstract
This essay proceeds from the perspective of systematic theology to emphasize the relevance of a methodological study of emotions for an understanding of religion within a cultural studies approach. Above all, the essay derives a critical benefit from emotional-historical and linguistic research on emotions. Sensitivity to the intricate relationship between language and emotion can guard against naturalistic as well as culturalist reductionism. Barth suggests that we should direct our focus to the literary-narrative dimensions of emotional expression as well as to phenomena such as the processuality of emotional life and mixed feelings. Those are significant precisely for the realm of religion.
