Emotions and Visual Arts, with a Focus on Greco-Roman Artefacts: A Response to K. Sonik
-
Petra von Gemünden
Abstract
On closer examination, visual media - notably those from ancient times and cultures - reveal quite a lot of uncertainties in accessing encoded, expressed, and received emotions, as Karen Sonik has already shown in her contribution in this volume. Following K. Sonik, this article tries to pick up her proposal to analyze the emotional intent, the emotional content and the emotions effect(s) of artworks with a focus on (but not exclusively on) artworks of the Greco-Roman period and tries to confirm, enlarge and differentiate her methodological proposals about dealing with artefacts from other periods and other regions. These potential approaches ought to stimulate further research, which can be achieved only in interdisciplinary teamwork.
