Parisian Rivalries before the War: Futurism and Cubism as Enemy Brothers (1912–1914)

Abstract
The exhibition of Futurist painters at the Bernheim-Jeune Gallery in 1912 gave rise, in Paris, to an intense rivalry between the Futurists, who were trying to find their place in the artistic field of the time, and the defenders of other art movements of French origin, notably Cubism. Indeed, it can be observed that Cubism, initially perceived by the French public as being of German or at least foreign origin, was progressively defended as an authentically French response to an artistic invasion from abroad. This essay looks at the rôle three key figures of the Parisian avant-garde played in this rivalry in the years leading up to the First World War: André Salmon, Albert Gleizes and Ricciotto Canudo. More generally, I shall clarify the genealogy of the avant-garde in the context of a symbolic struggle for hegemony on the Parisian art market and question its imperialist and nationalist underpinnings.
