Abstract

This chapter examines the central role of communication in human-robot interaction (HRI) research with a focus on social robotics. The concept of communication has been important for theorizing interactions between people and technology since the advent of computers, and the ability to exchange messages in a life-like manner is a defining aspect of social robotics. The chapter examines how interpretations of the mechanisms, modes, and social elements of human communication have been integral to the design of social technologies and interactions with them. Although such an approach has proved useful in moving HRI research and the design of technology forward, as the chapter also argues, this understanding of communication has often been only partial. With an aim towards furthering HRI research, rather than criticizing the past, the chapter outlines how critical elements of communication theory have been overlooked and undertheorized within HRI and offers correctives to more productively bring the study of communication and communication theory into HRI and HRI into communication.
