Future Presence: Living with Social Robots

Abstract
As robotics, artificial intelligence, and other technologies have rapidly advanced, robots are being designed to be increasingly interactive, social, and humanlike. Meanwhile, some are already assuming diverse traditionally human roles such as teacher, assistant, and companion. As increasingly sophisticated social robots become integrated into our lives, we need to better understand what physical forms they’re likely to take, how we’ll respond to and interact with them, and the potential benefits and dangers they’ll bring. This chapter relies on a multi-method review to predict and understand our future interactions with social robots. The chapter draws predictions from three key sources: the theoretical framework of the Media Are Social Actors paradigm, academic and industry experts as well as non-experts, and a textual analysis of popular media portrayals of social robots. These three sources are used to address the prospective forms and capabilities of social robots, the evolving nature of our interactions with them, and the psychological, physiological, and sociological effects they will have on us. Informed by the review, the chapter concludes with suggestions for actions we can take to help constructivevly shape the evolution of these human-like social robots and our lives with them.
