This chapter is in the book Extremophiles

Abstract

Cyanobacteria are a group of extremophilic organisms that are renowned for their capability to withstand a wide range of extreme environmental conditions. They are potential bioreagents for internal sequestration of metal associated with conversion of the bulk metal into its nanoform. Synthesis may occur exploiting the entire biomass, isolated cells or organelles, crude cellular extracts as well as purified biomolecules. Nanogold (Au0) and nanosilver (Ag0) are the most widely synthesized nanoparticles exploiting algal and cyanobacterial biomass, whereas other metals have been comparatively less used for nanometal synthesis. This chapter covers the innate potency of different types of cyanobacteria in nanoparticle synthesis, the mechanisms and biomolecules responsible for the bioreduction. Probable applications of the synthesized nanoparticles have also been discussed.
