Volume 1 of the Kempowski Yearbook addresses Mark und Bein. Although scholarly reception can be detected rapidly, which recognised the potential of this narrative, it is remarkable that a more lively reception has not occurred. Kempowski's so-called "episode" is full of provocative scenes and offensive characters - and far from politically correct. It is an experiment in cruelty and as such must challenge the recieving community.
