Abstract
Social entrepreneurs’ impact has been a continuous source of debate and intrigue in the field. Issues such as how to document, attribute and measure impact are at the forefront of the discussion. In this chapter we focus on a specific dimension of impact that has been highlighted in the work of a particular group of social entrepreneurs: the Fellows elected by Ashoka, one of the largest networks of social entrepreneurs worldwide. We unpack Ashoka’s vision and discuss 11 strategies that Fellows use to increase the agency of others towards social change. This analysis is based on the 2021 Ashoka Global Fellows Study, in which 817 Fellows were surveyed and 32 interviewed about how their work expands individuals’ sense of agency. We argue that sustainable social change can be achieved by strengthening individuals’ ability to contribute to their communities and that this is a primary way social entrepreneurs create impact.
