16 The Digital Transformation of SMEs

Abstract
In the constantly digitalizing world, digital transformation is seen as one of the ways for businesses to stay competitive. However, as many studies have pointed out, SMEs still lag behind larger, especially international companies in their digital transition and this gap negatively impacts their productivity and operations. Such scenario creates a need for policymakers to address this issue by appropriate policy measures and constantly monitoring digital transformation of SMEs in order to appropriately tailor the policies and support measures. The chapter offers an overview of opportunities, challenges, and barriers associated with digital transformation of SMEs. It sheds the light on the background for digital transformation of SMEs and reflects on the need to monitor the digitalization patterns tracing how an organization integrates ICT deployment with people and the processes to change business performance. It concludes with a conceptual framework of digital transformation of SMEs that links objectives, resources, impact, outcomes, and metrics, followed by implications for management practice and policymakers.
