14 Studying speech acts: An expanded scope and refined methodologies

Abstract
There is little danger in asserting that Andrew Cohen has been a pioneering researcher in speech act analysis. Indeed, it is clear from an overview of his work that he has contributed groundbreaking research to the theoretical and methodological underpinnings of speech act/interlanguage pragmatics analysis. In this essay we endeavor to discuss the scope of speech act research, how the scope has changed, and the various methods used to carry out such research. Thus, this chapter focuses on both theoretical and methodological issues on the progression of theory and method in pragmatics research. It addresses the questions: how did we get from there to here, and where are we headed?
