Abstract
During his visit to Greece, and on his way to Delphi in July 1840, the famous German archaeologist Karl Otfried Muller (1797-1840) went also to the ancient sites of Marathon, Rhamnus and Oropos. The results of his observations have remained unknown because he died some weeks later, but two of his unpublished notebooks have survived. Information in one of these is related here: what he saw during his short visits and what was of special interest to him. Included are also some drawings of Friedrich Neise, who as a draughtsman accompanied the group travelling with Muller: these are illustrated here for the first time.
