Probleme des Artusromans
Ein Kapitel aus dem Buch Probleme des Artusromans

Abstract

The article will discuss a specific deficiency of Arthurian verse romance, the lack of an epic background. The episodic scheme of chivalric enfances is based on individual autonomy that has banished the aspects of History and may result in a loss of reality linked with the frequent theme of the loss of identity and the theme of brooding. In this context the Chevalier aux deux épées seems to be a typical case in point. Later romances will try to remedy this lack of contextuality. Floriant et Florete, for instance, is an Arthurianized Byzantine story; Durmart le Galois is a substantially epic story with Arthurian touches.
