32 Discourse traditions and computational linguistics

Abstract
The concept of discourse traditions (DTs) has not yet been applied to computational linguistic (CL) analyses, partly because the theoretical approach has not yet gained enough audience. But both approaches share a common scientific object - text -, and this chapter thus reviews several textual dimensions that have already been tackled by CL: the semantic content, its segmentation and articulations within a text, as well as text classification and clustering; the semiotic and linguistic structure of documents and conversational agent modelling; the modelling and description of subjectivity, speech acts and communicative intents; and extra-textual features of discourse. These different approaches of discourse have not yet been unified in a general framework that would allow putting discourse traditions at the center of computational linguistic concerns. However, some key points are emerging that allow to devise a work program aiming towards a detailed analysis of documents and taking into account their clustering into discourse traditions as well as the life cycles of the latter.
