Abstract

Models of discourse segmentation are useful tools for analysing the information structure (IS) of complex utterances, which could in turn prove key in identifying DTs. However, the convergence of discourse segmentation and DTs is still largely unexplored. This chapter aims to show how syntactic and information structure can be interpreted in well-defined text areas as a sign of discourse traditionality. To this end, an analysis of information units in 15th-century diplomatic letters by Italian noblemen is proposed following the discourse segmentation units of the Basel Model (Ferrari et al. 2008). The informational configuration that emerges can be interpreted as a characteristic trait of a new DT in the epistolary genre that consolidated in the second half of the 15th century in Italian aristocratic circles.
