Abstract
Emergence and the autonomy of social - sociology between individualism and holism. Holistic approaches in sociology doubt that social phenomena can be reduced to individual properties. Attempts to substantiate the holistic position often take recourse to the concept of emergence. In this article the relation between both sets of concepts - emergence-reduction and holism-individualism - is scrutinized by looking at arguments brought forward by Jerry Fodor, Jaegwon Kim and R. Keith Sawyer. It is argued that there are several shortcomings in the idea of a ‘strong’ emergence in general and in the application to sociology. Thus, an individualistic interpretation of sociology should be preferred.
