Abstract

Collectors, whether individuals, libraries or other institutions have a variety of motives in acquiring books. Books may also pass through several hands over time. We examine the collection of sixteenth- and seventeenth-century English dictionaries amassed by the National Library of Russia in St Petersburg, attempting to trace the ownership of the various copies through time and space. Provenances are rarely complete, but something of interest can be gleaned from the book-plates, signatures, stamps, and other indications found in this collection.
