Hermann Cohen’s Critical Exposition of Kant’s Critique of Taste
Abstract
This article covers Marburg Neo-Kantian Hermann Cohen’s stance visà- vis the Kantian conception presented in the Critique of Judgment. Kant’s thought was of prime importance to Cohen’s project of systematic aesthetics. Though he shared Kant’s transcendental point of departure, Cohen formulated a number of critical remarks about Kant’s aesthetic thought concerning (among others) his teleology, conception of feeling, and concept of symbol. The article also discusses the differences that arise between Cohen’s and Gadamer’s positions regarding specific solutions in Kantian aesthetics.
