Criticism as Paradoxatism. The Heraclitean Critique of the Notion of Opinion
-
Sebastian Śpiewak
Abstract
This paper is focused on the critical approach of Heraclitus of Ephesus. His theory of logos can be viewed in the light of broadly-understood criticism, which was one of the distinctive features of the nascent philosophy at that time. It has been deemed important to analyze the Heraclitean critical project mainly as a form of critique of existing opinions (especially scientific and philosophical opinions), to which the name of “paradoxatism” shall be suggested as the most appropriate. Heraclitus’ criticism as “paradoxatism” turns out to be the main consequence of his view on the logos as the relevant object of cognition and knowledge in spite of its paradoxical nature in the case of the ordinary human cognitive attitude.
