Abstract

The article deals with the academic biography of the German-Jewish rabbi and Bible scholar Benno Jacob (1862-1945) between about 1890 and 1920. It presents documents from Jacob’s estate, such as letters, manuscripts and exegetical notes, which shed some light on Jacob’s exegetical “workshop” and on the background of his extensive commentaries on Genesis and Exodus. Jacob possessed several drafts of self-contained exegetical studies, the publication of which he did not pursue in his later years in favor of his intention to write a commentary on the whole Pentateuch.
