Abstract

Following an outline of the history of dictionary criticism in the Germanspeaking area, the review paradigm is presented in more detail for two dictionaries (Frühneuhochdeutsches Wörterbuch, Neubearbeitung Deutsches Fremdwörterbuch) that have not yet been completed. Based on the evaluation of all reviews on both works, central aspects of dictionary criticism are focused, which can be generalized to a good extent, regardless of specific dictionary features. Overall, the review situation for German historical dictionaries is inadequate. A continuous review practice by the journals is only given in exceptional cases and only a relatively small pool of journals takes into account reviews of historical dictionaries. A systematic review activity cannot be recognized as a whole, and the review frequency decreases markedly as lexicographic processing time increases. For the future, this leads to the need to intensify dictionary criticism by taking into account all historical dictionaries, to increase the proportion of longer reviews by experts, and to document all the reviews on the dictionaries‘ project pages.
