The Korean Sign Language (KSL) corpus and its first application on a study about mouth actions

Abstract
KSL Corpus Project is an ongoing project and aims to create a corpus for the documentation and research of the Korean Sign Language (KSL). For this purpose, language material has been collected from 148 deaf informants at five locations since 2015, and the plan is to collect more data in the coming years. The data is collected with the help of elicitation materials that have been used in other western sign language data collections. We describe how the cultural aspect influenced the efficiency of the elicitation materials, and present how the corpus data has been annotated so far. As a first sample of corpus-based research, we will introduce a study on mouth actions in KSL. Mouth actions have not been described yet and represent a new research area in Korea. The mouth actions are grouped by their different function and their frequency distribution is compared to other sign languages.
